Functions

Notaries are primarily concerned with the authentication and certification of signatures and documents for use abroad.

They are also authorised to conduct general legal practice (excluding the conduct of proceedings) They may exercise the powers of a Commissioner for Oaths.

The majority also practice as solicitors but the scrivener notaries do not, nor do some 55 of the general notaries.

Conduct and Discipline

Notaries are bound by practice accounting and other Rules broadly similar to those affecting solicitors. They are fully insured, and their undertakings in conveying and all other matters should be accepted without question.
Complaints are dealt with by the Faculty Office who will, in minor matters refer to the members ship bodies who operate Informal Complaints Procedures.

Identification

The Faculty Office will, on demand issue a formal certificate to confirm that a notary is in good standing and holds a practising certificate. The membership bodies will, on request, confirm membership.
